変異株ＰＣＲ検査（試薬）は、N501Y変異部位を識別することで従来株か変異株かを判定します。この検査は、全国の地方衛生研究所などを中心に行われており、実施できているのは陽性者のうちの約5〜10％とされます。国は変異株PCR検査を早期に約40%に引き上げる方針を打ち出していますが、そのためには、民間の検査会社の協力が不可欠とされます。

N501Y変異陽性となった場合にはゲノム解析を行い、国立感染症研究所の確認のもとで英国型、南アフリカ型、ブラジル型のタイプを決定します。また、N501Y変異陰性の検体についてもゲノム解析が行われており、免疫やワクチンの効果を低下させる可能性があるE484K変異が新たに確認されています。
